Come join us in Student Building 150 for a showing of Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life, a BBC television documentary by David Attenborough that chronicles the life of Charles Darwin, including events surrounding the publication of On the Origin of Species.

Attenborough outlines the development of evolutionary theory by Darwin through his observations of animals and plants in nature and in the domesticated state, visiting sites important in Darwin’s own life, and using archive footage from Attenborough’s many nature documentaries for the BBC.

He reviews the development of the theory since its beginnings, and its revolutionary impact on the way in which humans view themselves – not as having dominion over the animals as The Bible says, but as part of the natural world and subject to the same controlling forces that govern all life on Earth.

Please RSVP for the Facebook event.

We are also looking for movie suggestions for future movie nights. Here are movies or TV shows already suggested:

  • Zeitgeist
  • South Park S10E12 and S10E13
  • Monty Python’s Meaning of Life

Come join us for tea and discussion in the Walnut room in the IMU this week. Russell’s Tea Parties are SAIU’s periodic general-purpose casual meetups, named after Bertrand Russell’s ‘teapot’ thought experiment, his argument that the burden of proof in supernatural claims lies with the person making the claim.

Come, drink tea, tell us about your religious and non-religious experiences, start a friendly debate, discuss current events, find other members with common interests, start a group project, or even go totally off-topic for a while.

Come join us for tea and discussion in the Whittenberger Auditorium in the IMU this week.

The planned topic for this week’s meeting is diversity in the atheist/secular movement. I’d like to investigate why there is roughly a 2:1 male to female ratio in the SAIU and the extreme paucity of non-Caucasian people in our group. Of course, this is only a starting point, so who knows where we’ll end up by the time we’re done. :)
